The Puppet's Lament

I sometimes wonder what I did wrong
And why I never see you -
                I've been alone too long.

It started on the day I met you,
You left me standing by the city gate;
Nothing I can do will make you wait
Behind enemy lines with spies everywhere,
I know you think I exaggerate, but
                I've been alone too long.

Every love bird has its song,
Even a monkey has a mate,
But you were born to frustrate me,
Your attentivity negates me,
You string me along
Until my armpits ache.

Someday I know I'll awake
To find you totally gone,
                And I won't be alone too long.
